Solid as a Rock
Several months ago a friend of mine was trying to convince me of the Flat Earth theory. I listened to what he had to say and it all made sense except one thing. He couldn't explain the lunar eclipse. So, after all was said and done I was about 99% convinced the earth is indeed flat. But my own personal conclusion was also parroted by my brother who said, "This all very well may be, but it doesn't have any real bearing on my relationship with God. I still believe and I always will. It won't change it in any way."
I completely agreed with that statement until one day recently while on one of my walks and talks with God, I was marveling at the sunset and considering Flat Earth. I was wrestling with the lunar eclipse. As I gazed at the moon God spoke one word, "Foundation". It was as clear as if He had been physically walking with me. I pondered what He meant by that. He is a God of Foundations. Everything He does is rock solid and done with a purpose. He is loving and caring and gentle and kind and steady and trustworthy. I started to weigh this against the Globe theory and found them to be at odds.
Globe theory says we are spinning at 1,000 mph, and orbiting thousands miles an hour around the sun which is shooting through space at millions of miles an hour. The picture I got was making me a bit nauseous. Then I saw a father swinging his child around in circles by the arms and thought, "that doesn't seem so bad." But that only accounts for part of the motion. So imagine that same father standing on the back of a tractor trailer rig going 100 mph in a circle around an object that is moving down the road at 500 mph all the while he is swinging his child around by the arms. Does that sound like God to you? Me neither.
The Bible is full of foundational truth. It begins with creation, which is the foundation of all life. God is never unclear about how he created this world we live in. He doesn't give all the details, but he does clearly show us that we are secure and unique. Here are just a few foundational references to consider.
1 Samuel 2:8 "For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; on them he has set the world."
2 Samuel 22:8 "The earth trembled and quaked, the foundations of the heavens shook; they trembled because he was angry" Heaven is on a foundation, too!
Job 38:4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand."
Matthew 7:24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock."
Did you catch that last one? WISE MAN built his house on a rock! Who is the wisest of them all but God himself? What does it say about God if Globe theory is correct? There are many passages about foundations, and so we can see that God is a God of foundation. The opposite is Satan who is not only a liar, but he perverts the truth of God and blinds those who will not see what is clearly in front of them. For example: Water is flat in a glass, on a lake, in a pool, but clings to a ball spinning through space? Really?
Are you beginning to see what I saw? It does matter what you believe about the earth. The same people who taught us that the earth is a spinning globe also taught us that we evolved from sludge over millions of years. It is no wonder that Christians are not secure in their faith and many want to combine evolution with creation. Why wouldn't they if God is so impersonal as to send us spinning helter skelter across a vast universe where we could run into other planets and be destroyed? That isn't love, not any kind of love that I would feel secure with.
Imagine Jesus, the foundation of our faith, waiting in heaven above the earth. Things are being prepared and we can see His return is imminent. The Bible tells us a couple of things must happen first. If you are like me and believe what Paul says in1 Thessalonians 4:13- 5:11. God has a different plan for his church. We are to be removed, because we are not meant for wrath, and we are to comfort each other with these words. The prophets foretold horrible times of death and destruction and God's judgement on earth. 1 Thessalonians 5:9 "For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ." So prior to the end time prophecies coming to fulfillment the Church the body of Christ will be removed. I didn't write this to argue a point, only to give you hope by what scripture says. It doesn't mean we won't have trials and be persecuted while we are here. It only means we won't be subject to the wrath of God when it is poured out on the earth.
Another thing that must happen is written in Joel 2:31 and Acts 2:20. It is also described in Revelation 6:12 "The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord." This is interesting to me because I finally found out what a lunar eclipse really is. I saw a video that explains it plain as day, and makes clear this particular event at the same time. The video presenter showed an eclipse and when the full eclipse happened the moon turned RED like the color of blood. It was the absence of the sun's light on the side of the moon which was visible to us that causes this phenomenon. So imagine the sun in the sky at the same time but the sun going black. This would cause the moon to turn blood red as it does during an eclipse, but without the eclipse happening. That would certainly be something to make people a little freaked out! I've add the link to this video below, because I can't explain it as well as the presenter does. It is quite interesting and resolves my final 1%.
I was thinking about all of this today as I was driving to the dog park. My soul became giddy. I started to laugh as I drove. There was nothing funny, but it was one of those times where there was such joy in my heart that I just burst out laughing at the goodness of the Lord. If you've ever experienced it, you know what I mean. It is similar to those times when uncontrollable sobbing happens without explanation. These are cleansing moments that are given to us by the Holy Spirit. Sometimes our soul needs to weep and sometimes it needs to laugh so hard that our sides ache. I Imagined Jesus riding in the truck with me laughing, too. It is a joy we share together. He is mine and I am His.
Was this the Joy set before Him that he looked forward to while enduring the cross for my sake?
So, yes, it does matter. It doesn't change who I am in Christ or who He is to me. But it strengthens my faith in a Rock Solid God, who never changes and has me securely in His hands as a father would a beloved child. The earth is flat folks, because it is set on a foundation not a roller coaster!
I couldn't embed the video on this page, so here is a link to the video about the moon. https://youtu.be/GqgFuxsjYN0
